This delicate little owl is carved from a very unique material, a Tagua Nut (pronounced "tah-gwa"), also known as "vegetable ivory". This is a seed that comes from a palm-like tree that grows mainly in South America. This is becoming a very popular material in several crafts as it is a renewable resource, is an excellent substitute for elephant ivory and it's production staves off de-forestation.
